A Note from Sarah Bennett,
developer of the HCOS Curriculum Packages:
Spelling: You’ll notice that we don’t include a spelling program in the package. There are too many differences between the spelling programs to recommend one that will work for the majority of kids. When choosing a spelling program you’ll need to think about whether your child is a more natural speller – in which case an independent program that is more workbook based would probably be a great fit, or whether your child needs more interactive instruction in order to learn to spell. I highly recommend the All About Spelling program for students who need more explicit instruction and for all younger learners. It’s a hands-on approach that teaches the phonograms and the rules of spelling. For students who pick up new words easily I recommend Spelling Workout or Building Spelling Skills.
Fine Arts: HCOS students can choose between dance, drama, music or visual arts to cover their fine arts. If you choose to do visual arts at home, I highly recommend the Artistic Pursuits program. It teaches art using well known pieces as examples of different art concepts. Each lesson has a hands-on component and these projects use a wide variety of art materials. The materials list is in the book and materials can be purchased at your local craft store (Michael’s, etc.)”
